Should computers sleep

I just got up. It is still dark. I am thankful that my ancestors were not eaten by animals. I wonder why all the animals have to sleep. Probably because the Earth turns on its axis so dependably. Maybe computers should have to sleep. Other computers could watch over them while they sleep. Would other computers eat them while they sleep? Maybe there is a fortune to be made preparing the operating systems.

  1. YES. So their owners can, too. (says Chris)

YES. To set a good example (says Chris) assuming they will eventually control our world.

Somewhere between COMMAND and OPTION is The SPACE BAR.
    Call it SLEEP.

  2. Chris insists that I add--to HER idea--that they are awaiting our commands in their sublime unawareness.

  3. But...CAN computers sleep? I hear our computer beeping and gurgling during the night, and I have always assumed those noises are some kind of computer version of REM or dREaM...but now Chris and I are beginning to wonder if our computer CAN sleep. The real question seems to be: ON or OFF. Do PEOPLE have any capacity or setting between ON and OFF besides SLEEP? Or dare we say OBLIVION?

  4. Wait...wait. oblivion must be the OFF setting and dreaming the ON setting in the function of sleep. So we the people are functionally asleep? Anybody out there?

  5. "There is no clear distinction between consciousness and unconsciousness. For example, there is a spectrum of awareness between being wide awake and being fast asleep." - Neville Holmes in an essay, Digital Machinery and Analog Brains.
