  My father and mother stayed over downtown in a hotel one New Year's Eve, while my grandmother lived with us. I didn't know quite what to make of it, but now I am proud to have had such cool parents. My mind wandered to this memory when I discovered Ella May Morse, a pop singer. According to Wikipedia, she got her first gig with Jimmy Dorsey when she was 14, because she and her mother lied about her age. Her words are the slang of the '40s.
